Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Appoints Dr. Carsten Keune as Head of Executive & Professional Lines in Germany

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has appointed Dr. Carsten Keune as Head of Executive & Professional Lines in Germany.

“Carsten comes to BHSI with decades of experience in the global insurance industry. Under his leadership, we look forward to expanding our Executive & Professional Lines portfolio and our team, and bringing more customers across Germany BHSI’s broad range of financial lines solutions, backed by our financial strength and excellent service,” said Andreas Krause, Country Manager, Germany, BHSI.

Carsten has more than twenty years of industry experience. He was most recently Head of Global Commercial Lines Underwriting at ERGO. Before that, he was Underwriting Director Europe, Middle East and Africa at XL Catlin in Germany. He holds a law degree from Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn.

BHSI in Germany offers a wide range of insurance solutions for Financial Lines Business including Commercial D&O and Public Offering of Securities Insurance (POSI), Financial Institutions D&O and Professional Indemnity, and adjacent lines of business to corporate customers in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Appoints Property Leadership in Middle East & Asia

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has appointed Kapil Palathinkal as Head of First Party Lines, Middle East, and Carlos Beltran as Head of First Party Lines, Asia, overseeing General Property, Energy and Construction.

“We are pleased to round out our regional property leadership with the promotions of Kapil and Carlos, two experienced leaders who will further build on their valuable contributions to BHSI and our customers,” said Marc Breuil, Head of Asia Middle East, BHSI. “Along with our financial strength, underwriting acumen, and CLAIMS IS OUR PRODUCT philosophy, BHSI offers customers the advantage of a consistent, stable approach to energy, construction and general property risks worldwide.”

Kapil, who is based in Dubai, joined BHSI in 2018 as Head of Energy & Construction. He has more than a decade of experience with construction, energy and engineered risks and is trained as a chemical engineer.

Carlos, who has more than two decades of industry experience, came to BHSI in 2018 as Head of General Property for the Middle East. In his new role, he will be based in Singapore.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Appoints National Product Line Leaders for UK, Opens New Office in Manchester

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has appointed Irfan Esa as UK National Property Manager, Gemma McKenzie, as UK National Casualty Manager, and James Burke as UK National Executive & Professional Lines Manager. All three will be based out of BHSI’s newly established office in Manchester.

“We are pleased to expand our on-the-ground capabilities in the UK, installing stellar product leadership and the foundation to continue to grow our team in our new office in Manchester,” said Chris Colahan, Head of UK & Europe, BHSI. “With this leadership team, coupled with Mark Walker, Head of Customer & Broker Engagement for the UK, we look forward to expanding our local market relationships – and spreading BHSI’s clear-cut, customer-focused underwriting and CLAIMS IS OUR PRODUCT philosophy to customers throughout the UK.”

Irfan comes to BHSI with more than 17 years of experience in technical property underwriting in the UK. Gemma brings more than 20 years of UK casualty underwriting experience to her role at BHSI. James has 16 years of industry experience spanning all financial lines in the UK.

BHSI in Manchester is initially providing property, casualty and executive & professional lines with a large account focus in the region. In collaboration with specialty teams in BHSI’s London office, the new Manchester office will also offer a full spectrum of additional coverages in the UK, including marine, transactional liability, construction, and life sciences coverages.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has named Katrin Thiel as Head of Claims in Germany.

With her extensive experience and expertise, she is an excellent ambassador of our Claims is our Product philosophy and will ensure our customers receive the best possible claims service, delivered with great care and compassion,” said Andreas Krause, Country Manager, Germany, BHSI.

Katrin comes to BHSI with nearly 20 years of industry experience. She was most recently Head of Claims at AXA Corporate Solutions in Germany. She holds a law degree from the University of Cologne.

Katrin is based in BHSI’s office in Cologne.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has promoted Austin Elkin to Senior Care Leader, Healthcare Professional Liability in the U.S. Austin takes over the role from Mary Nolan, who is currently overseeing the launch of BHSI’s new Senior Care Primary Auto offering, but will retire in September following a distinguished 30-year career.

“Austin has played a key role in establishing and expanding our healthcare and senior care portfolio, while simultaneously building our loyal customer base. We are excited to elevate him to a leadership role on our growing team,” said Leo Carroll, Head of U.S. Healthcare, BHSI. “Many thanks to Mary for her numerous contributions to BHSI and to the healthcare industry. Mary has certainly left her mark, and we wish her all the best in her well-deserved retirement.”

Austin first joined BHSI in 2013 as Senior Underwriter, Healthcare Professional Liability. Austin previously served as a large account Underwriter on the Healthcare team at Zurich Insurance Group.

Austin will continue to be based in BHSI’s office in Atlanta.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Rolls Out Environmental Impairment Liability Insurance in France

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has introduced Environmental Impairment Liability (EIL) Insurance in France.

The new policy pairs coverage for multiple environmental risks with technical and legal support to help insureds mitigate environmental incidents and claims.

“Our experienced environmental team has created a policy that provides expansive coverage in clear, simple policy language, backed by BHSI’s financial strength and excellent service,” said François-Xavier d’Huart, Country Manager, France, at BHSI. “We are pleased to continue to round out our product offerings in France and fill an important market need.”

The policy provides coverage for an insured’s operating sites as well as off-site services, such as transport operations. Coverage includes third-party claims arising from accidental and gradual environmental damage, environmental liability, and cleanup costs for the insured site. Costs to mitigate an incident, including emergency response expenses are also covered.

BHSI can provide EIL coverage for operations of all sizes on a primary or excess basis.

Phil takes the reins of BHSI’s Medical Stop Loss division from John Snyder, who is retiring after a distinguished industry career spanning more than four decades.

Phil comes to BHSI with more than 30 years of industry experience. He spent 13 years at Companion Life Insurance Company in various roles, including President. Prior to that he was with Munich Re in Princeton, NJ. He began his career at Mercantile & General Reinsurance Company in Toronto, Canada.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance is now providing Defense Base Act (DBA) insurance on a global basis through its DBA-dedicated underwriting and claims team in Dubai.

“We are pleased to bring this mandatory coverage to contractors and companies operating throughout the Middle East and around the globe,” said Neeraj Yadvendu, Head of Third-Party Lines, BHSI Middle East. “Our coverage is supported by BHSI’s experienced Dubai-based DBA specialists who have well-established relationships with key vendors in volatile regions, ensuring exceptional services to customers when and where coverage is most needed.”

DBA insurance provides disability, medical and death benefits to covered employees, whether the injury or death occurs on or off the job in the course of employment. Further to its standard offering, BHSI can provide additional coverage in other key areas, such as Emergency Medical Evacuation and Supplementary Repatriation Expenses, tailoring its approach to meet customer needs.

U.S. federal law mandates DBA insurance for U.S.-government contractors, private employers and contractors working outside the U.S. on American military bases or under a contract with the U.S. government for public works or for national defense. These works include providing defense equipment, life support, materials or services to U.S. allies; or providing welfare services to benefit U.S. Armed Services.

Trained as both a boiler & machinery and fire prevention consultant, Jean-François has nearly 25 years of engineering experience. He spent the last 17 years as District Manager at Global Risk Consultants, where he led a Paris-based technical team responsible for risk consulting on a range of occupancies across portions of Europe and Africa. He began his carrier as Field Engineer at UAP Kemper HPR Company.
