Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Promotes Mohammed Hannoun to Head of Casualty, Middle East

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has named Mohammed Hannoun Head of Casualty for the Middle East, based in Dubai.

“Mohammed has played a pivotal role in building up BHSI’s casualty capabilities in Middle East since we started the Dubai operations in 2018. His extensive experience in the region, especially in driving the growth of our medical malpractice and Defense Base Act (DBA) offerings, will be essential in positioning BHSI as the go-to carrier for casualty lines in the Middle East,” said Neeraj Yadvendu, Head of Third Party Lines at BHSI in Dubai.

Mohammed, who has more than 12 years of industry experience in the region, joined the BHSI Dubai team in 2018 as a senior casualty underwriter. He takes the reins of BHSI’s Middle East Casualty portfolio from Emir Erdur, who has transitioned to the casualty underwriting team at BHSI UK.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Enters Swiss Market

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has opened a new office in Zurich, Switzerland, and appointed Leander Metzger as Country Manager.

“Establishing this new office in Zurich reflects our focus on expanding our presence and relationships throughout the DACH region. It is another important step in our strategy to steadily grow our capabilities, our team, and our local presence throughout Europe,” said Andreas Krause, Head of DACH, BHSI. “Leander has had great success building European relationships and we are excited to have him lead our expansion in Switzerland.”

BHSI is now underwriting property, casualty, and executive & professional lines in Switzerland and expects to launch several other product lines there in the coming months.

“We look forward to building our team in Zurich and bringing BHSI’s commitment to excellent technical underwriting and service and our CLAIMS IS OUR PRODUCT® philosophy to customers and brokers throughout Switzerland,” said Leander Metzger, Country Manager Switzerland. Leander has more than 25 years of industry experience. He joined BHSI in June 2016 as Head of Property, Engineering Lines and Risk Control, and will retain that position along with his new role. Before coming to BHSI, Leander held management positions with both insurance brokers and insurers.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Opens Office in Lyon, France

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has further expanded its presence in Europe with the establishment of an office in Lyon, France.

“As we continue to grow steadily across Europe, the time is right to expand with an office and expanded team in Lyon,” said François-Xavier d’Huart, Country Manager, France. “Complementing our office in Paris, our team in Lyon will provide our full line of property, casualty and specialty insurance as well as claims and engineering services locally to customers in southeast France.”

BHSI teams in both Paris and Lyon bring BHSI’s multinational capabilities, which span 170 countries, to local companies in France.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Promotes Two to Key Leadership Roles

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has promoted Sanjay Godhwani to President, North America Region, and David Bresnahan has been promoted to Global Chief Operating Officer.

“Sanjay and Dave have been pivotal in the building of BHSI since our launch in 2013, helping to build our product lines, our talented team and our positive culture,” said Peter Eastwood, President and CEO, BHSI. “In their new roles, they will have a continued positive impact on our team and our ability to bring certainty and service excellence to our customers and distribution partners around the globe.”

Sanjay will be responsible for all North America Region underwriting and underwriting support groups, customer & broker engagement, and BHSI’s Global Catastrophe Engineering & Analytics group. Sanjay has more than 25 years of industry experience and is a fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society. He continues to be based in Boston.

Dave has more than three decades of insurance industry experience. In his new role he will oversee real estate and administration, finance, audit, information technology and operations throughout BHSI’s global platform. He continues to be based in Boston.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has promoted Angela Meyer to Head of Life Sciences in North America. She was previously Head of Life Sciences for the Southeastern region of the U.S.

“Angela has played a major role in building our North American Life Sciences portfolio for the last seven years, bringing exceptional technical acumen and creative problem-solving to these complex and evolving risks,” said Steve Harris, Vice President, Casualty, BHSI. “In her new role, she will lead our efforts to further expand BHSI’s presence in the Life Sciences market with our stable capacity, financial strength and CLAIMS IS OUR PRODUCT philosophy.”

Angela joined BHSI in February 2014, and has nearly 20 years of experience in the insurance industry.
BHSI provides Products Liability, Professional Services Liability and Clinical Trials Liability coverage for Life Sciences companies, including multinational programs with local policy issuance capabilities in 170 countries.

Angela will continue to be based in Atlanta.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has promoted Chris Warrior to Head of Executive & Professional Lines in the UK, and named Jessica Kirby as Head of Commercial Management Liability Insurance in the UK.

I look forward to seeing all that Chris and Jess will achieve for BHSI and our E&P lines customers in their new roles.”

Chris joined BHSI in 2019 as Head of Management Liability for the UK and Ireland. In his new role, he will oversee BHSI’s UK team and portfolio across all Executive & Professional Lines, including Management Liability as well as Professional Indemnity, Cyber and Transactional Liability Insurance. Chris has nearly two decades of experience underwriting in the UK marketplace.

Jess Joined BHSI in 2018 as Senior Underwriter, Commercial D&O. In her new role as Head of Commercial Management Liability for the UK, she will oversee the team and portfolio she has played a critical role in building for BHSI in the UK. Jess has nearly 15 years of experience in the UK Financial Lines market.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Opens Office in Frankfurt

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has expanded in Germany, opening a new office in Frankfurt. The company already has offices in Cologne and Munich.

“BHSI is committed to building long-term relationships by providing sustainable technical underwriting solutions and excellent service,” said Andreas Krause, Country Manager, Germany. “Being close to our customers in the important financial center of Frankfurt will advance these efforts and is especially important now, with our team and our insurance portfolio growing so substantially in Germany.”

Underwriters from across all product lines, including property, casualty, and executive & professional lines, as well as BHSI risk engineers, will be based in Frankfurt.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has appointed Beth Freeman as Senior Vice President, Accident & Health Underwriting, and Ken Gumbiner as Senior Vice President, Accident & Health Sales.

“As we expand our A&H capabilities in the U.S., we are so pleased to have Beth and Ken, two exceptionally experienced A&H professionals, to lead these efforts and deliver the full value of BHSI’s brand, financial strength and CLAIMS IS OUR PRODUCT philosophy to the marketplace,” said Phil Gardham, BHSI’s Senior Vice President, U.S. Accident & Health, and Head of Medical Stop Loss. “As we grow our product portfolio, we are continuing to expand our Medical Stop Loss appetite, recently forged a new partnership to provide A&H programs for international students, and we will be launching new A&H products soon.”

Beth comes to BHSI with more than 25 years of experience underwriting an array of A&H products and was, most recently, AVP, A&H Underwriting and Program Business, at Companion Life Insurance Company. Previously, Beth served as Chief Underwriting Officer at Montgomery Management/Spectrum Underwriting Managers, a division of Companion Life. Beth holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Arcadia University in Pennsylvania.

Ken brings more than three decades of industry experience to his new role at BHSI and was, most recently, SVP, Head of Accident & Health Sales, North America, at Swiss Re Corporate Solutions. Previously, Ken served as Executive Vice President of Sales, IHC Risk Solutions. Ken attended Union Bible College in Westfield, Indiana.

Beth will be based in Philadelphia and Ken will be based in the BHSI office in Indianapolis.

David has more than three decades of experience in both Lloyd’s and company markets in the UK. He was most recently Active Underwriter DCH386 and Head of Financial Lines at QBE Insurance. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Queen Mary University of London.

David is based in BHSI’s office in London.
