Mouser Electronics Touts its State-of-the-Art Distribution Advancements

(BRK.A), (BRK.B)

Berkshire Hathaway’s Mouser Electronics, Inc., the industry’s leading New Product Introduction (NPI) distributor, is highlighting its implementation of state-of-the-art Vertical Lift Modules (VLMs) at its global distribution center in Texas, USA, setting a national standard in technological advancement for distribution.

VLMs — essentially giant vertical filing cabinets, complete with shelves and an automated elevator — store tens of thousands of electronic components. When activated by the employee, the VLMs deliver the components directly to the workstation, vastly increasing efficiency and floor space. The automated machines can reduce an employee’s walking time by 45 percent or higher.

“The digital revolution is driving worldwide demand for electronic components,” said Glenn Smith, President and CEO of Mouser Electronics. “To meet this demand, we are making substantial capital investments in state-of-the-art automation systems to expand capacity and maximize efficiencies in our global distribution center.”

Mouser now has 55 Vertical Lift Modules — including 11 brand new modules. Now authorized for more than 800 manufacturers, the global distributor is expanding its footprint and growing its business position to meet increasing customer demand worldwide. The VLMs are expected to house up to 120,000 parts total once fully online, helping Mouser’s distribution teams greatly expedite orders for its 630,000 customers worldwide.

“We are excited to have the largest installation of Vertical Lift Modules in all of North America, a true testament to our belief in working smarter. With the 200,000 square foot addition to our warehouse more than halfway complete, our teams are laying the groundwork for several new automation systems,” Smith added.

Construction is also under way on a 50,000 square-foot office building addition on Mouser’s 78-acre campus at the Dallas-Fort Worth global headquarters. When complete, Mouser’s global headquarters and distribution center will consist of 1 million square feet to accommodate Mouser’s vast inventory of more than 1 million unique SKUs for products and technologies. Part of Berkshire Hathaway, Mouser now has 27 offices worldwide, including new offices in Poland, Vietnam and Brazil that opened this year.

With its broad product line and unsurpassed customer service, Mouser strives to empower innovation among design engineers and buyers by delivering advanced technologies. Mouser stocks the world’s widest selection of the latest semiconductors and electronic components for the newest design projects. Mouser Electronics’ website is continually updated and offers advanced search methods to help customers quickly locate inventory. Mouser.com also houses data sheets, supplier-specific reference designs, application notes, technical design information, and engineering tools.

Mouser Electronics and Transphorm Sign Global Distribution Agreement

(BRK.A), (BRK.B)

Transphorm Inc.—the leader in the design and manufacturing of the highest reliability high-voltage (HV) Gallium Nitride (GaN) semiconductors—has signed a global distribution agreement with Berkshire Hathaway’s Mouser Electronics, Inc., the authorized global distributor with the newest semiconductors and electronic components. Per the agreement, Mouser will distribute Transphorm’s JEDEC- and AEC-Q101-qualified GaN FETs and evaluation tools.

Mouser now offers devices from Transphorm’s 900 V TO-220 and 650 V TO-247 and TO-220 GaN FETs. The devices feature low crossover losses, reduced gate charge, and smaller reverse recovery charge, offering similar field reliability to silicon carbide (SiC) FETs and improved performance when compared to silicon MOSFETs. Compared to competitive GaN transistors, Transphorm’s FETs also offer the industry’s highest threshold voltage at 4 V and gate robustness rating at ±20 V.

Also available are Transphorm’s automotive-qualified GaN FETs including the TPH3205WSBQA, the industry’s first GaN solution to earn AEC-Q101 qualification, and the TP65H035WSQA, the industry’s first 175-degree-Celsius-rated AEC-Q101-qualified device. As with non-automotive applications, in-vehicle power systems using the 650 V GaN FETs can gain up to 40 percent more power density while reducing overall system costs by as much as 20 percent when compared to similar silicon-based solutions.

Lastly, Mouser stocks Transphorm’s evaluation platforms, allowing designers to study switching characteristics and efficiency. The kits support various power system topologies, including inverters, half-bridge buck or boost (through-hole and SMD solutions), and the bridgeless totem-pole PFC. They also cover a range of power ratings. Examples include the 1.2 kW and 2.5 kW half-bridge evaluation platforms as well as the 2.5 kW and 4 kW bridgeless totem-pole PFC evaluation platforms.

Mouser Electronics’ Glenn Smith Honored as Top CEO

(BRK.A), (BRK.B)

Glenn Smith, President and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway’s Mouser Electronics, has been named 2019’s Top Public CEO by Fort Worth Business Press. The prestigious award was presented at a luncheon August 28 at Fort Worth’s River Crest Country Club.

Smith has been a recognized leader in the North Texas business community since 2004, when he was elevated to his position as President and Chief Executive Officer of Mouser Electronics, a global industry leader that inspires innovation by offering the widest and newest selection of semiconductors and electronic components.

While still a college student, Smith joined the company as a part-time warehouse employee in 1973 when Mouser was essentially a startup operation in San Diego, Calif. Smith rose through the ranks, working in nearly all departments in multiple management roles. Smith’s leadership and tenure has seen Mouser grow from a small distribution company to one of the world’s largest electronic component distributors, with more than 2,500 employees in 26 offices worldwide and nearly $2 billion in annual sales. Acquired in 2000 by Fort Worth-based TTI, Inc., Mouser is one of the TTI family of companies and an industry leader in the successful portfolio of Berkshire Hathaway companies.

Smith learned early on about the importance of hard work, attention to detail and giving the customer a great experience. That focus remains key to the company’s mission.

“It is a great honor to receive this award, and I thank the Fort Worth Business Press as well as all of the Mouser employees who contribute every day to give our customers a best-in-class experience,” Smith stated. “I’d also like to acknowledge our wonderful customers and suppliers. Stocking the widest selection of the newest products from our supplier partners reinforces our commitment to our customers to be a single source for all the components and tools necessary for the electronic design process. There’s a lot of teamwork involved in our business success.”

Smith has served for years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA), working to protect the authorized supply chain of electronic components. In 2011, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the ECIA for leading the rapid launch of the ECIA inventory search website, www.eciaauthorized.com. Smith currently serves on the Distribution Council for ECIA.
